by The Almost The music genre Emo is a hard one to define. Most emo bands hate the term and don't like the label. Therefore, it's very hard to trace just what is emo and what's not. I tend to categorize rock influenced by strong vocal harmonies and poppy, but heavy instrumentation as emo. Whether or not you agree that The Almost is actually emo or not is up to your own judgment, but I place it in this genre. The Almost is the brain-child of Aaron Gillespie of Underoath, a very popular screamo band (again, up to debate) that's Christian, although acclaimed by the nonreligious, too. Therefore, The Almost, automatically have credibility. While honestly I wasn't that impressed with the record at first, it does grow on you especially when Aaron goes into worship chants. A good example is the song "Dirty and Left Out" where he goes on and on about how dirty he has been, but suddenly turns to the words, "Jesus, Jesus, There's something about your name, Master, saviour, Jesus" repeatedly. Another, more powerful example is in "Amazing Because It is." It's shocking to hear these words in 2007, with a brand new band, and a relatively new genre of rock. "I'm the type of person who lets fear drive, Cause I'm addicted, I'm needy, I'm lost without you, I need you, I need you." "Amazing grace, How sweet the sound, That saves a wretch like me, I once was lost, But now I'm found Was blind but now I see." While this record isn't something that will ever be in the top albums of all time, I do recommended it because of the lyrics and the potential for it to get you into a new form of music. And at around 7 bucks, it's a steal. 3.5 stars.
